What is Whole Body Vibration?
Whole Body Vibration (WBV) is a low-impact method that creates eccentric muscle reaction enabling anaerobic activity – burning energy without oxygen, unlike cardiovascular exercise that burns energy by using oxygen. WBV causes the muscles to experience an involuntary contraction at the same rate that the platform is vibrating. The stimulus produces a stretch reflex in all of your muscles meaning that your muscles react to the vibration by contracting and relaxing automatically.
How Did Whole Body Vibration Come About?
The Russian space program began using WBV in the 1960s to help cosmonauts recover from muscle atrophy more quickly. Since, Olympic athletes have adopted WBV into their workouts. Trainers and doctors have now been using WBV for well over 40 years.
The Benefits of Whole Body Vibration
Here's Dr. Ian Yamane to explain some of the benefits.
Some of the benefits include:
Immediate Benefits of Whole Body Vibration
More muscle fibers are activated during WBV and as a result, more muscles are used more efficiently increasing the muscle force and strength. Studies have shown that muscle strength is directly correlated to muscle density. This rapid contraction of the muscles also required more blood to be pumped to them thus increasing the circulation.
Who Can Benefit from Whole Body Vibration
Whole Body Vibration is good for anyone looking to experience the benefits mentioned above. It is especially good for athletes looking to increase muscle force and strength as well as older women who are more likely to develop osteoporosis or going through menopause.
