4 Phases of Fasting Benefits

The extensive list of benefits that come from fasting don’t necessarily rush in all at once. It generally occurs in phases, as your body begins to respond to the fast. Though each body is different, the general benefits from fasting is somewhat consistent. As you begin your fast, listen to your body and pay attention to the added benefits that trickle in during each phase outlined below.  

Phase 1: (About 12-48 Hours)

Many consider this phase the most difficult, as the body transitions into fasting mode. Part of this transition includes hunger, fatigue, and irritability. The benefits during this phase are mostly preparatory for the later phases, but beneficial nonetheless. The willpower exercised during this phase gives the mental satisfaction and emotional momentum to push through to later phases. This phase can also begins to cleanse the body of toxins and improve heart health.

Phase 2: (About Day 3-7)

While fasting is not the only way to enter ketosis, ketosis begins during phase 2. This means you may feel less tired and hungry. It also means that the body is burning stored fat as its primary power source. The obvious benefit here is weight loss. There is also a deep cleansing effect that takes place during this stage. Impurities from the body safely and quickly leave your systems and ultimately your body.

Phase 3: (About Day 8-15)

This is the phase that seasoned fasters look forward to the most- where the “fasting high” occurs. At this point the body has fully adjusted to the fasting, contributing to a significant boost in mood, energy, and mental clarity. After ridding itself of toxins and stressors, the digestive system begins to rest and heal. This healing has significant health implications to many areas of body, drastically decreasing susceptibility to disease.

Phase 4: (Breaking the Fast)

Depending on how long you fast, you may need to ease your way back into eating solid food. Juices, cooked vegetables, and broths can help acclimate your body back to the old way of eating. Whether the goal is weight loss, cleansing toxins, or overall health, fasting is a powerful and effective way into an improved healthy lifestyle.
