Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis

Valhalla Wellness

Want a true picture of your health and fitness in less than a minute? Introducing Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). BIA is a quick and painless way to determine your body composition.

The latest BIA technology, which is featured at Valhalla Wellness, can calculate your body composition in less than 20 seconds.

This measurement provides an accurate snapshot of your inner health. By monitoring your body composition on a regular basis, we can measure progress in your weight loss, fitness, or other health goals.

Why Try Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis?

The standard way to assess healthy weight is with BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI is a method of calculating a person’s tissue mass to determine whether they are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

However, standard weight measurements, including BMI (Body Mass Index), cannot accurately calculate the percentage of body fat versus muscle. To truly get an accurate picture of health in connection to weight, knowing the percentage of body fat is crucial.

For one thing, muscle weighs more than fat. Sometimes, people will have high BMIs without having a weight problem, because BMI numbers can overestimate fat on muscular people with high muscle mass. A high BMI may not necessarily indicate obesity if the added weight is due to muscle.

Likewise, a lower BMI doesn’t always indicate peak health, either. Too little body fat can contribute to osteoporosis, irregular periods, and other health challenges.

How Does Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Work?

With our state-of-the-art equipment at Valhalla Wellness and Medical Centers, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis is fast, easy, and accurate. It provides a much more complete picture than just BMI.

To get your BIA reading, you simply stand on a monitor. You may also be given hand-held electrodes for readings for your legs, arms, and abdomen.

A very small and safe electrical signal is sent. Fat tissue will provide resistance to this electrical impulse (also known as impedance), and this is calculated to determine your percentage of body fat. Once the reading is complete, we will have the following information:

1. Body Fat Percentage

The proportion of fat to your total body weight is your body fat percentage.

2. Body Fat Mass

Body fat mass is the weight of the fat stored in the body.

3. Muscle Mass

Muscle mass is an estimate of the weight of the muscle tissue in the body.

4. Total Body Water

Staying hydrated is extremely important to health and well-being. This measurement indicates the amount of water in the body as a percentage of total body weight.

5. Basal Metabolic Rate

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) varies from person to person. This is the minimum number of calories your body needs at rest to function. The slower your BMR is, the easier it is to gain weight. BMR changes throughout a person’s lifetime. It can also be increased with the development of more muscle mass.
